A TEAM of Yeovil College graphic design students has won a competition to create an awareness campaign for the Yeovil office of the British Red Cross.

The three BTEC National Diploma students had to create a series of mixed media images which both celebrated 100 years of the Red Cross in Somerset and illustrated the overall aim of the organisation – to help vulnerable people in crisis. The images were first used at the Yeovil open day last month.

Jess Irvine, Tom Mitchell and Robert Cooper produced a series of stylish black and white posters which creatively depicted the organisation’s seven fundamental principles, by which the Red Cross is bound.

Robert said: “As part of the brief, we had to challenge the common misconceptions about the Red Cross.

“People often think it’s just about the elderly and first aid. Our job was to challenge those perceptions.

“We came up with a range of ideas, some of which worked well conceptually but weren’t really feasible. The final posters developed from the ideas that worked.”

Jess added: “We only had a month to work on this brief. That made it nice to do because it’s short and I like working under pressure.”

And Tom said: “I really liked the way that this project was on a large scale. We work on several live briefs each year, but it’s exciting to produce designs for a bigger, international organisation.”

As a reward for their hard work, the three students will have the opportunity to complete work experience with the Red Cross marketing team.

Course lecturer Adrian Ponter said “This was a really positive project for the students and not only did they enjoy it, but they also produced some excellent work of a professional standard.”

The winning designs took pride of place in the Yeovil office of the British Red Cross during a recent open day for staff, volunteers, partner organisations and the public aimed at illustrating and celebrating the charity and its work.
